Welcome to Maymester

Hello and welcome to "Engineering Venice," a three week summer course for undergraduate engineering students.  The course is sponsored by Norwich University's David Crawford School of Engineering and is designed to expose students to the unique engineering challenges of building a modern city on an ancient foundation.

This summer (2017) we will be in the iconic city of Venice, Italy.  Together, we will be studying the unique challenges of modernizing a 1500-year-old city without altering the traditional landscape.  In particular, we will be studying electric power systems, transportation, food supply, social services, climate change and rising sea levels, water, septic and refuse disposal.

In addition to studying the technical aspects of infrastructure modernization, we will investigate the effects of technology on culture, art and architecture and what role it has played in forming the modern Venetian society.  So click "follow" and come along, as we learn about "Engineering Venice!"

Ciao!

  1. On our second full day in Venice, we took a tour boat around the canals of the city. The ride lasted a little over an hour. It was a great way to see some of the major attractions of the city from a different view than the day before. Our tour guides were full of information. Our group was split into two boats so everyone could get good views of the city. The tour brought us to through the entire city of Venice and showed us many of the islands as we went through the bay and down the Great Canal. It was interesting learning some of the history of the buildings in Venice. The city hall is in a building that was built in the early 1200s. The most interesting fact I learned was the existence of seven star hotels, of which Venice is home to one of just six in the world. While on a water bus after the tour had ended, while having a conversation with a man from Dubai, we learned that the seven star hotel in Dubai costs $20,000 a night. It was a great tour that taught us a lot about the city of Venice.
